Condemnation of Politicization of Legal Dispute and Unjust Drag of Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas’ Name into Unrelated Matter The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), the apex and most respected students' body in Nigeria, has observed with deep concern the ongoing controversy surrounding the arrest and prosecution of some individuals over alleged defamatory social media posts related to business and land transactions. While we recognize the right of aggrieved parties to seek legal redress, we are deeply worried about the deliberate politicization of this matter and the unwarranted dragging of the name of the Speaker of the Federal House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Tajuddeen Abbas, into a purely civil dispute. Our Position: NANS has always been at the forefront of defending the rights and interests of Nigerian citizens, particularly the youth. We remain unwavering in our commitment to human rights, democratic ideals, and the rule of law. However, while we...
On 28th May 2011, Dr Goodluck Jonathan penned his executive signature to assent the bill seeking the passage of the Freedom of Information Act into law. This act which is aimed at making public records and information more freely available among other motives is known today as the FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT 2011. It is within the auspices of the provisions of this act that a controversial youth activist, Abdulaziz Musa Alhassan popularly known as Shiek Ibn Baaz has tendered a petition to the Economic and Financial Crime Commission seeking information and investigation into the management and expenditure of Kaduna South Local Government Funds by the Executive Chairman. Ibn Baaz in his letter expressed that the matter should be investigated as a matter of expediency and the information should be availed to him within 7-days as established by Section 4 of the subject act. When asked the reasons for such a legal move, Ibn Baaz stated that he is concerned about the state of the L...
The Arewa Youth for Liberty (AYFL) strongly condemns the recent actions of the Depot and Petroleum Products Marketers Association of Nigeria (DAPPMAN) against the Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals Company. We view this as an act of sabotage and outright hostility toward the Nigerian people, who stand to benefit greatly from the refinery’s efforts to reduce fuel prices and provide massive employment opportunities. Dangote Refinery has invested heavily in the growth and development of Nigeria’s oil sector, including spending over ₦3 trillion to acquire trucks that will ensure nationwide distribution of petroleum products at reduced costs. Rather than commend and collaborate with Dangote Refinery in its efforts to ease the hardship caused by rising fuel prices, DAPPMAN and its allies, including NUPENG, appear determined to frustrate these positive strides. If such hostile actions by DAPPMAN continue, AYFL will have no option but to resist and confront any individual, group, or...
